In Kannapolis This Holiday Season, the Night of the Week Decides the Ticket

Which night of the week are you planning to spend at Village Park? Your answer decides how you buy train tickets this year, and it also decides which Swanee Theatre show you can fit into the same outing.

The City of Kannapolis opened online reservations for the Winterland Express on October 14, 2026, at 9 a.m., but those reservations only cover Sunday through Thursday nights. Friday and Saturday train tickets are sold only on site at Village Park, on the day you ride. The tree lighting falls on a Friday and the parade on a Saturday, while most of the Swanee's holiday programming runs on nights you can reserve. Pick the night first, then build the rest of the outing around it.

Five Nights Book Online, Two Are Walk-Up Only

Celebration of Lights runs November 13 through December 30. Hours are 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5:30 to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Admission to the park, the light displays and the Kannapolis Singing Bears is free, and so is parking at Village Park. The carousel and the train are the only things that need tickets.

That leaves the train as the one piece of the evening you have to plan for. Here is how the week splits, based on the City's Kannapolis Christmas page:

Night Park hours How to get Winterland Express tickets
Sunday to Thursday 5:30 to 9 p.m. Reserve online in advance, or buy walk-up tickets if reservations are gone
Friday and Saturday 5:30 to 10 p.m. Buy on site at Village Park the day of your visit

The City also says walk-up tickets are sold every night at the carousel or the park building whenever reservations aren't available. On any night the park is open, you can still ride. If you want a guaranteed seat at a set time, though, the online reservation page only works for Sunday through Thursday.

The train is a G-24 scale replica of a CP Huntington engine. It loops past light displays built around a countdown of the 12 Days of Christmas. The Village Park Carousel was made in Italy and carries 1,800 lights, Brazilian oak decking and hand-painted Venetian murals.

Opening Night Is a Friday, So It Starts on Site

The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony is Friday, November 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Village Park, 700 West C St. It includes live music and entertainment. Fireworks follow at about 6:45 p.m., and admission is free.

Celebration of Lights opens the same night. Because it's a Friday, the train runs on day-of, on-site tickets for opening night. If your household wants the ceremony, the fireworks and a train ride in one evening, plan to buy at the park, since the online system won't offer that date.

The weekend nights after that offer a few extras. The City says local crafters and artisans set up at Village Park on weekends throughout the season, and food trucks sell food and drinks. Santa photos are free, and there's a holiday craft and s'mores at the fire pit. Weekends bring the craft shopping and an extra hour of park time. Weeknights let you lock in a train time ahead.

The Swanee Shows Land on Nights the Park Takes Reservations

Downtown, the Swanee Theatre carries most of the season's indoor programming, and several of its dates fall on the nights the park takes reservations.

The Embers Christmas Show, Tuesday, December 8. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. The Swanee's event page sells tickets online and says anyone under 18 must attend with a parent or guardian. With an 8 p.m. curtain, this one stands on its own. Village Park closes at 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, so the lights work better on another evening that week.

A Christmas Carol, December 18 to 20. Explore Cabarrus lists performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, with tickets from $27.50 to $38.50. On the Swanee's page for the Sunday matinee, doors open at 2:30 p.m.

That Sunday matinee is the one show on the calendar that pairs cleanly with a reserved train ride. The play gets out in the afternoon, and Village Park opens at 5:30 p.m. Because Sunday falls in the online window, you can book the Winterland Express ahead for December 20 and know the whole day is set before you leave the house. The Friday and Saturday evening performances fall on walk-up nights at the park, and their 7 p.m. curtain overlaps most of the lights' hours.

One Downtown Weekend Holds Most of It

The weekend of December 11 to 13 is when downtown Kannapolis is busiest.

  1. Friday, December 11, through Sunday, December 13. The free Holiday Model Train Display runs at the Swanee Theatre, according to the Discover Kannapolis 2026 calendar. Hours for 2026 haven't been posted yet, so check the Swanee's site as the date gets closer.
  2. Saturday, December 12, at 6 p.m. The Kannapolis Christmas Parade runs at night, and the City says the downtown route includes Laureate Way and West Avenue.

The parade route and the free train display share the same downtown blocks on the same weekend. That makes Saturday the natural night to stay on West Avenue and hold Village Park for another night. If Village Park is part of the plan that weekend, Sunday the 13th is the only one of the three days with online train reservations. The Swanee display also stays open that day, according to the Discover Kannapolis listing.

Explore Cabarrus's 2026 holiday guide lists the same Swanee dates if you want the countywide calendar in one place.

West Avenue Has One Fewer Rooftop for Parade Night

Dinner plans for downtown nights look a little different this year. Towel City Tavern at 126 West Ave served its last meals on Sunday, September 27, after a two-year run downtown, CharlotteFive reported. The restaurant opened in summer 2024 serving barbecue alongside Cabarrus Brewing Co. beers. It sat close enough to Atrium Health Ballpark that customers could watch Cannon Ballers games from its rooftop. In their farewell message, quoted by CharlotteFive, the owners described the place as a spot for "celebrations and community events" and "nights out after a ballgame with friends." No new use for the space has been announced.

The same CharlotteFive report points out that downtown's revitalization has added 40 new businesses and restaurants in recent years. West Avenue still has places to eat before the parade or after a Swanee show. Over at Village Park, the City's food trucks cover the lights nights.

For the nights between those big dates, the Gem Theatre's coming-soon page currently lists The Cat in the Hat November 5 to 18, Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping November 19 to December 2, and Avengers: Doomsday December 17 to 30.

The Nights Village Park Goes Dark

The City lists three closures during Celebration of Lights, plus a weather caveat:

  • Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26. Closed, even though Thursday is normally a reservation night.
  • Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24. Closed.
  • Christmas Day, Friday, December 25. Closed.
  • Bad weather nights. The park may close for inclement weather, and the City asks visitors to call 704-920-4344 for current information.

That leaves Wednesday, December 30, as the final night of the season. It's a weeknight, so the train can still be reserved online, and the park closes at 9 p.m.
